… Can two souls trapped in separate cages ever find each other?

Twenty-six years have passed since the link between heaven and earth was severed and all hell broke loose. The fighting raged until the human magic users took over the cities, driving most of the preternaturals into hiding.

This is the world Sydney Burgess has grown up in, locked inside her father’s compound. As the daughter of a human mother and a vampire king, she has all the weaknesses of a vampire but none of their strengths. Anthony keeps her on a tight leash, ever-vigilant against the constant imagined threats to her safety. But all she wants is to break free and start a real life.

Noah Riley has lived in captivity for the past twenty years, so long he barely knows how to be a werewolf anymore. Even with a photographic memory, most of his past before the facility feels fuzzy at best. His strongest memories are of the little girl he protected during his childhood: Sydney. When he reaches his full power on his twenty-eighth birth moon, he’ll have a chance to break free to find her and finally reunite with his family.

But vampires and werewolves are mortal enemies. Even if Sydney is Noah's true mate, the vampire king would kill him before he ever let a filthy werewolf near her, especially one of questionable sanity.

This is the sixth book in the Preternaturals series by Zoe Winters. However, this book could be read as a stand alone without issue. It takes place twenty six years into the future and features characters that we meet as children in previous books in the series. They are all grown up and the world has changed since we last visited. It almost has a bit of a dystopian feel to it.

Vampires and shifters are hiding from the human magic users. Vampires who once lead all of the supernatural, are now hiding and feeding from the humans who are kicked out of their cities for whatever law that they broke. Shifters have it a little easier, because they can live if the wilderness and hunt for their food as their animals.

Sydney is the daughter of the former vampire king and his human mate. She got the worst of both worlds. She lives off blood, has sensitivity to sunlight, but as fragile as a human. They aren’t even sure if she is aging like a human or not. She barely remembers a time before she forced to move with her family into the underground compound. She feels pretty much like prisoner in a gilded cage.

Noah is a werewolf who was born in his fur. That makes him more powerful than a standard shifter. He was captured when he was still really young by some magic users. Shifter blood and hair are used in magic and potions. But since Noah is more powerful than others, he is a real prize to the magic users. They have kept him a in a glass cell for most of his life.

Werewolves and vampires are mortal enemies, though these two played together when they were young because their human mothers were friends. They were separated really young first because of their father’s hatred of each other and then because of Noah’s capture.

This is a great story of how love can overcome impossible fates and prejudice. Their families also have to come to terms as they both just want what is best for these two lovebirds. We see pretty much all the characters from the previous books, so series lovers have something to look forward to.
